O.C. Charity Spotlight: StandUp for Kids

In 2003, the Orange County chapter of StandUp for Kids was born. With it came a new outlet of support for the community of homeless youth in OC– outreach centers, housing assistance, and mentorship programs. StandUp for Kids finds a way to reintegrate every youth back into the community, whether through going back to school or finding them a job. The main focus of StandUp for Kids programs is to lead youth to self-sufficiency and prevent gang involvement, teen pregnancy, drug use, and dropping out of school. In 2017 alone, they assisted over 350 youth, formalized partnerships with local shelters, and logged more than 6,200 hours serving children in Orange County.

Brittany, now working at StandUp for Kids, came through the program herself and is a testament to its success. Living in her car, using drugs, and in an emotionally drained state, Brittany found StandUp for Kids. They gave her the tools necessary to become sober, develop leadership and practical skills. She is now a wife and mother; her ability to thrive, she says she owes to StandUp for Kids.

StandUp for Kids offers many opportunities to those who wish to support their work. Donate and contribute to the StandUp for Kids wishlist: $150 will buy groceries for 3 youth for a week, $69 a bus pass for a month, and $175 will pay the GED examination fee for one person. Drop off a fast food gift card, or link your Ralphs, Albertsons, or Food 4 Less shopping rewards card to StandUp. As an entirely volunteer-run organization, StandUp is always looking for volunteer mentors, street outreach volunteers, and leaders.

Have a strong force of employees or coworkers? Rally them together and start a workplace campaign to give to StandUp for Kids, or sponsor a social event for reintegration of the program youth.
