Many families, especially those in areas like Orange County with a high cost of living, can only survive if both parents work. But what happens to their kids when they get out of school? What about the single-parent families, who have no one to pick the kids up after school, let alone look after them?
Even in Orange County, where it seems sometimes that everyone but you is living high on the hog, there are parents who struggle with childcare. And if after-school care is found, can they be assured of its quality? Will their children be well looked after, be in a positive environment, and learn new skills?
That’s why the Boys & Girls Clubs were started, and thankfully we have our own here in Anaheim. They believe that “a safe and loving environment for children will enable them to realize their full potential, and become productive, caring, and responsible citizens.” Isn’t that what we all want for our kids?
The Boys & Girls Club of Anaheim provides kids with a safe place to grow and learn, all while having fun. Their programs and services bolster the development of children by “instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging, and influence.”
Their programs are extensive, from literacy and S.T.E.A.M (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) learning to teaching kids about street smarts and how to be a reporter. They team with local companies, like Southern California Edison, and encourage these sponsorships throughout the community. There are even two meals a day for their young visitors.
